Every few months a look takes over: a font, a layout, a type of animation. For a moment, every new site seems related. Some of that is healthy — techniques improve and spread. The trouble starts when a trend is used as a substitute for a decision.
Trends are borrowed; taste is built
Taste is the accumulation of decisions you can defend: why this type pairs with that voice, why the accent appears exactly twice on the page, why the motion slows down instead of speeding up. Taste survives trend cycles because it was never about the surface.
A quick test
- Cover the logo — could anyone tell this is your brand?
- Name one thing on the page that was a choice, not a default
- Would this still feel right in eighteen months?
Use trends the way a chef uses seasonal ingredients: knowingly, sparingly, and always in service of a signature. The goal is not to look current. The goal is to look like you — currently.
